A major problem in testing the document type definitions (DTDs) of the current TEI Guidelines has been their size and scope, which is somewhat beyond the capabilities of many low-end SGML processors. For pedagogic purposes, and to help familiarise ourselves with as wide a range of software as possible, we have therefore been working on a simplified and much reduced DTD. This retains most of the core features of P1, but renames several tags to comply with the de facto limit of 8 characters imposed by the 'basic SGML' recognised by all SGML parsers. The simplified DTD, of which a first draft is being presented at the current workshop, is documented in the following pages. It also serves to suggest how TEI conformance can be achieved without necessarily implementing every suggestion in P1.

The text of the DTD itself follows this introduction, and is followed by two automatically-generated indexes to it. The first index lists all elements defined in the DTD in alphabetic order, giving for each a brief definition of its intended function a list of the attributes that may be supplied for it a list of the elements that it may contain, which uses the standard SGML syntax for describing a content model, a list of the elements within which it may be nested. (Note that this list does not distinguish between true nesting within an SGML hierarchy and elements that are contained by virtue of inclusion exceptions) the name of the corresponding element in the published TEI Guidelines; this is enclosed in square brackets if the content model for the TEI equivalent element is significantly different from that specified here.

The second index lists all the attributes defined in the DTD in alphabetic order, giving for eacha brief definition of its intended function a list of the elements to which it may be attached its declared content, using standard SGML syntax its default value, using standard SGML syntaxNo TEI equivalent names have been supplied for the attributes: for the most part, they are identical; the few differ, do so by simple abbreviation.

Fuller definitions of the intended function of all the tags andattributes listed here are provided in P1.

A caveat: the present text is very far from definitive. It represents a summary of the work done by the TEI Working Committees as first published in August of 1990. The need for some substantial revisions has already been identified by some working groups, while other working groups have yet to produce statements of the extensions they wish to see made. Comments and criticism from the public is also very welcome. A TEI conference in the Autumn of 1991 will review all the proposed changes and extensions, and a final draft of the recommendations will be submitted to the Advisory Board in the following Spring, for publication in June 1992.
