These Guidelines first discuss the basic mechanisms suggested for markup, namely those of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and then outline the suggested procedures for text encoding, progressing through basic issues of character representation through the tag set suggested for tagging textual features in various types of text and for various types of analysis, to the mechanisms provided to allow those encoding texts to modify the scheme here described by changing, or adding tag definitions.
