The character / glyph model

  • Unicode assumes that a difference can be made between
    • a concrete glyph as it appears on paper or other media
    • an abstract glyph-shape (or classes of glyphs)
    • characters, that represent classes of glyph-shapes
  • Only characters are encoded in Unicode
  • Glyphs can not be encoded in Unicode
