Poster proposals for those planning on
attending DHOxSS 2015 (or members of the University of Oxford not
attending DHOxSS) should be submitted by Monday 18 May 2015. All
submissions (max 250 words) will be peer-reviewed by the DHOxSS
Organisation Committee and subject specialists. We will notify
applicants of the outcome before the end of May. The Poster session is at the welcome drinks reception the evening of Monday 20 July 2015.

Reminder! Call for hosts: TEI Members’ Meeting and Conference for 2016

This is a public call for bids to host the annual TEI Members Meeting and conference for 2016. Meetings have traditionally been held in the fall. The last two meetings were held in Rome (2013: http://digilab2.let.uniroma1.it/teiconf2013/)  and Chicago (2014 http://tei.northwestern.edu/); this year it will be held in Lyon. The site of the meeting has typically alternated between Europe and North America, but that is not a fixed rule.

The TEI website includes a document about Hosting a TEI Conference and Members Meeting (http://members.tei-c.org/hosting). It is a useful blueprint, but many of its details are subject to negotiation or the preferences of the local host. The details of it can be condensed as follows:

ACM ITS 2015 welcomes original, high-quality research and industry contributions that advance the state-of-the-art in the area of interactive surfaces (including tabletops, large displays, mobile, and mini devices). The conference embraces innovations in a wide variety of areas including design, software, hardware, understanding of use, and applications or deployments of interactive surfaces. This year’s event will be held at the Vidamar Resort Madeira hotel on the wonderful island of Madeira in Portugal.

Extracted Features Dataset Now Available for 4.8 Million Volumes/1.8 Billion Pages

The HathiTrust Research Center is pleased to announce the release of its Extracted Features Dataset (v.0.2), a dataset derived from 4.8 million public domain volumes, totaling over 1.8 billion pages currently available in the HathiTrust Digital Library collection. The dataset includes over 734 billion words, dozens of languages, and spans multiple centuries. Features are informative, quantified characteristics of a text, and include:

 

  • Volume-level metadata

  • Page-level features

    • Part-of-speech-tagged token counts

    • Header and footer identification

    • Sentence and line count

    • Algorithmic language detection

  • Line-level features

    • Beginning and end line character count

    • Maximum length of the sequence of capital characters starting a line

Job Opening: Visiting Research Assistant Professor in Syriac Studies and Digital Humanities

Vanderbilt University and Syriaca.org invite applications for the open position of Visiting Research Assistant Professor in Syriac Studies and Digital Humanities.

The term of appointment is one full year, beginning in fall 2015, with the possibility of renewal for one further year.

Available position: Assistant webmaster for the TEI Consortium

The TEI Consortium seeks nominations for an assistant webmaster to be appointed by the Board of Directors through December 2016. This person will work with the webmaster (currently Kevin Hawkins) to manage the TEI’s website and email lists hosted on that site, and to assist with archiving conference websites, email lists, and other noteworthy content developed outside of the TEI’s web infrastructure. We are also seeking someone who can help with a task force investigating upgrading or replacing the CMS used for the TEI website.

The time commitment is intermittent, but it’s essential that the incumbent:
* have some experience or aptitude with command-line tools, mailing list administration, and similar light technical skills
* be detail-oriented
* be easy to reach by email

1st EADH international Day 8th October, 2015: Call for participation

The first EADH International Day will be held on the 8th October 2015 at UNED (National University for Distance Education – Open University) Madrid, Spain.
The first annual European Association for Digital Humanities Symposium (EADH Day) will be held in conjunction with the 2nd International Conference of the Hispanic Digital Humanities Association at UNED, and hosted by LINHD in Madrid. The purpose of the event is to provide the principal annual focus for practitioners of Digital Humanities in Europe to network and discuss common challenges and opportunities.
