The Text Encoding Initiative Consortium (TEI-C) is an international organization whose mission is to develop and maintain guidelines for the digital encoding of literary and linguistic texts. Its members include libraries and digital humanities centers around the world.
The TEI guidelines, first published in 1994, are the de facto standard for representing humanities texts. The latest version, published in 2008, prescribes use of XML and other standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
For more information on the TEI, see the TEI-C website.
